Picky three-toed...is she getting a good meal?

Dexter6185 Oct 26, 2004 04:52 PM

I have an adult female three-toed box turtle who, as far as fruits and veggies go, eats only bananas, peaches, and strawberrys. She absolutely hates veggies (including carrots, lettuce, spinach greens, celery and potatoes)not that I expected her to like them anyways. I can't remember one three-toed I've ever had liking veggies. Anyways, of the fruits listed she absolutely loves bananas and she usually eats them more than the others. She seems to be attracted to bright, sweet foods.

As far as meats go, she loves superworms and nightcrawlers and will sometimes eat slugs.

Is this a healthy diet for my turtle? Any ideas how I can successfully add variety her diet?

Thanks

By finely chopping her food you can get closer to making sure her diet is varied: it eliminates the possibility of her get a whole mouthful of only one food item.
Luckily you already know what she likes, so you can mix the veggies in with the favorites. Try orange fleshed squashes and sweet potatoes, too.
After hearing so many tales of turtles becoming somewhat fixated on bananas, I don't even feed them to mine: they seem to prefer berries anyway.

Chopping her food sounds like a great idea! I'll try it....

Thanks

What I have done before is to get a blender, and some canned dog food, along with lots of veggies... Mix it all in the blender and the turtle will just think she is getting a treat of dog food. It has worked with mine anyways.
