Housing for large retics

boidboy14 Oct 26, 2004 05:15 PM

Hi I have 2 Reticualted pythons, 1 super tiger and a yellowhead. But I was wondering what your cage preference for an average sized adult retic would be because I want to breed them, and an 8 foot cage doesnt sound big enough to me but i dont know.

Well, for an average size up to about 15-16', 8'x3-4' would be a good size, but still retics do get past 15'-16', a 12'x4' cage would be a good size for a large retic, also for breeding a pair. These are just estimates though, I mean every retic is different, some males might only reach 13', so it's up to you if you would rather give them a huge home or the minimum, but right now I'm using 8'x3' cages for my retics they are 8' and 9' and they have more than enough room probably for a LONG time.

Hey Ben.

Those two look like MonsterCages; are they? I have a 4-foot model and like it very much. I intend to get more.

Regards,

Bill

Ben...I just ordered a large python cage from Monster Cages.
How do you heat yours?

ben_renick Oct 29, 2004 09:39 PM

Well I have a 5.0 Floresent on the cool side, which is about 80-85 degrees, and then I have a 100 watt red light on the hot side which keeps it at about 90-95 degrees. If the cage is kept in a cooler area you might want to go with a 150 watt light in the cage, and maybe get one of those wire guards for it so the snake wont burn itself. I keep my cages in my room, which I like to keep toasty, so it keeps the temperatures pretty even and comfortable for everything. BUT this is for an 8 foot cage, if you are going smaller, don't go with the 150 watt. It all depends on the size and the actual room temp, but if for an 8'x3/4' I would go with a 100 or 150 watt.

I am going with 8 ft cages...I was going to use the Ultratherm heat mat that is 48" x 11", and a 20 watt halogen light in a 75* room.
If I find I cant keep my temps where I want them, then I will install a radiant heat panel, although I dont like the idea of them using so much electricity.
I'm sure all the herp keepers have noticed a large jump in electric bills.
I'm trying to downsize my heating...doing away with big bulbs and using low wattage heat mats and such.
So you use only a red light bulb and a florescent?

This is a pic of my retics cage, It's an 8 foot walk in cage and stands 5 foot tall. In my big walk in cages my retics 80% of the time are sleep or soaking. they hardly move.

Hi I have a lot of huge snakes and a hand full of other reptiles that need the same temps, so i use brian smiths methode and heat up the hole room and my family helps me mist all of the cages. I have a humidifier for the room but its not enouph, i need to get another. I also have heat lamps for the cages but thats just so they can see, I take the snakes out a few times a week for natural sun light. In california its easy to care for these animals cause i think the weather helps. This is some of the ways I keep them happy but, some people may think diffrent. You have to try methods and see what works for you.

I keep my Ajah in a 6ft Vision for now. Heating is not a problem @ all w/ me. I use ProProduct radiant heat panels and they work GREAT. I read some saying they use up too much electricity but the don't @ all. They actually use up less than most conventional heating elements. My electric bills went down after I got my radiant heat panels.

Hey Ray.

I use PP's radiant heat panels in all kinds of cages and love them. I have a 6-foot Neodesha custom for my blue tegu and I use an 18 x 24" panel (150 watt) to heat it.

What size panel do you use in your 6-foot vision? And, is the room the cage is in normal room temps or do you keep that room warmer?
