color change

bmelv24 Oct 26, 2004 05:42 PM

I am thinking of getting a GTP in the near future and just doing some research before I decide. I am leaning towards an aru since they seem to be more calm than biaks. I wanted to know around what age do they undergo their color change?

I wouldn't worry too much about getting any certain locality. Most "Dealers" will have absolutely zero locality data on the animals they sell. If they do, more than likely it's bogus info. There are only a few people that work with true locality animal with documentation. If you are looking for a calm animal, your best bet is going to be an established yearling or older chondro, produced and cared for by the breeder. You may pay a little more, but knowing that the animal you recieve has been "babied" since hatching, is worth the extra few cents. Besides, who wants the headaches that come with imported chondros. I've had my share, and many others will say the same. The amount saved, will be made up in vet bills and then some. Good luck with which ever is chosen.

as far as temperment, there will be nice biaks and nasty arus. You can't necessarily tell how any locality animal is going to react to you or it's surroundings. They are still wild animals and will act as such. Just the same, there will be calm WCs and nasty CBBs.

That is kind of the direction I was leaning, however, by the time they are yearlings have they already turned form yellow or red to green?

Not necessarily. Some lines begin a change at 4-5 months and some may not start for 12-16 months. In my case, my SCZ babies kind of do both, but the majority are usually finished by 10-14 months. I've got babies right now that started the shift at 4 months. When they start to feed on fuzzies, you can almost watch them grow.
