Question for you Bairdi guys

tempest Oct 26, 2004 07:32 PM

I saw in the classifieds today that someone is selling an albino Bairdi. That's the first I've ever seen or heard of one of those. Is this new, or I have I just missed them? I must admit I never really thought much about Bairdi until I saw some of the spectacular pics that guys like Draybar have been posting.
Cheers!

Albino is a very common trait...I'm not sure exactly how it would get to become an albino bairdi, but i'd presume it was bred with an ablino texas rat? I'm not really sure. I havent ever heard of them before either, but I found a picture, and found this to be a very interesting looking adult. Looks somewhat like a mexican bairdi.

actually the albino gene was produced in germany from 2 normals.....and germany or any of europe doesnt have the fascination in morphs that we (americans) have.....the albino was shipped back here and bred to produce the line.....

there is speculation as to if it is a intergrade....but that is highly unlikely.....due to the europeans NOT breeding for "ABNORMALITIES"

wild caught snakes can have the hidden genes and sometimes produce albino offspring.....its like winning the lottery lol to have 2 snakes with the same gene producing a homozygous recessive gene ......the chances are astronomical if you have unrelated pairs (same local can make those chances better)

either way they are gorgeous and i have one on order.....lol

Funny how for people who are not interested in abnormalities the Germans get so lucky. That is where back in the eighties a East German couple bought a Honduran Milk. Seven years later they obtained a mate for it which produced the world's first albino Honduran.

There are albino bairdi being produced. Keith is correct in his post on their history, except I believe a couple of bairds het for albino is what came back to the United States. An albino may have come back I'm not sure on that. The het bairds were purchased at a show in Florida. There has been some stories of integration that have come along with the albino bairds. First, it was said they were crossed with black rat snakes. That doesn't work since you would get a few of the offspring that would retain their pattern and bairds just don't do it. The same would hold true with the Texas rat snake. It doesn't seem consistent to get the amel gene from a black rat or Texas rat. Then the story developed that the amel gene came from a yellow rat snake. The yellow rat snake does go from a pattern to a striped snake, but the transition is different. The baird's rat snake goes from cross bars to stripes which is a different transition than what obsoleta go through. I've seen and held the founding albino parents that are descendents from the hets that came from Europe and they are pure bairdi in my opinion. Keep in mind, I did not collect the founding stock to these and unless you do, it is subject to question. I've never picked any albino bairds up and I most certainly had one of the best chances. I live in Bakersfield where one of the partners to Todd Smith lives. Todd had the project for several years and produced albinos and hets. I was asked a couple times if I wanted to get an albino and het. I didn't get any, not because I thought they were integrades, but because I really thought I wanted to keep the natural bairdi which have plenty of colors for me. Over the last year and a half I've become interested in having them in my collection to work with. I'll hopefully be getting what I would like in the near future from Gregg Feaster. Gregg is also trying to prove out what is believed to be a hypomelanistic biard's rat snake. The founding parents that are descendents from the albino hets purrchased in Florida were in Southern California the last time I saw them at the San Diego IRBA show.

Ric blair is offering the albinos....(sounds like a fun project to go with mine).....and i have ordered a female.....not sure where he got the origionals from......

theres another source has a male for sale.....

not sure how many people have them.....altho i did see a post in a older forum of a woman that bred two....she thought they were normal and came out with 2 albinos....(guess they were hets...or possibles that proved out).....

I for one am in love with the normal bairdis.....(thanks to jimmy lol).....but albino morphs always intrigues me since i had a albino corn as a kid....20 plus years ago now...(paid 100 dollars for that snake)......the lack of black to me is gorgeous and it changes the whole pattern.....this is why i purchased an albino bairdi (to go along with the 3 strains of albino black rat i now have)....but i will breed her to produce hets someday.....just not in a hurry

the pic crtoon posted is the one from i believe the mother of the one i ordered......awesome animal and very unusual in the trade......

these are my opinions.....

P.S.....my new additions have me quite excited ....even tho i didnt even have one out of the container this morn. and it bit me lol
