Humidity

charky2002 Oct 26, 2004 07:49 PM

The last couple times that my boa has shed it has come off in pieces. I know this is due to the humidity being to low but I am having a terrible time trying to keep it up. My question is does anyone here use a humid hide(house/box with moist substrate; bed a beast type)like I do with my tegu. Would this cause any problems with a snake...skin infections, ect??
Thanks
Charlene

Hey Charlene, First off we need some more info from you. What type of set-up are you using? What does your humidity run? What about your temps? What type of heating are you using? To help answer your question we need some more specific details concerning your situation and the environment provided. As for the box trick most that use it keep diffrent types of Boas like Rainbows, Black Headed Pythons. So lets have some details.

I do not use any humid hides in my cages (not anymore anyway).
I simply mist down my snakes with a water bottle. Or you can get a larger water dish and place it over/under your heating element (screen cage tops are a nono if your using them).

If you want to use a humit hide, just get a rubbermaid bin and cut an opening for your snake... toss some substrate in there (cypress mulch?..coco bedding etc) give it a spray down and wallah =)

Hi I keep her in a melanine cage with sliding glass front. I couldn't tell you the size off hand but its appropriate for her size. For substrate I am using aspen shavings and misting twice a day, she also has a big bowl to soak in but rarely uses it. Right now to fix the shedding problem I have been soaking her daily and its working. I think I will switch back to newspaper because I never had this problem when I used it.
