kod130 Oct 26, 2004 09:30 PM

my female panther is egg bound. she is really skinny and hasen't eaten anything for a week or so. I have offered her everything to eat but she won't eat. I bred her a couple of months ago and she laid eggs i haven't bred her since, and now she is gravid. she has dug two holes and nothing has happened. i have felt her sides and i can feel eggs. Is there anything i can do?

Hi there,

You may have heard this a million times, but in this case, it really applies, and that is to take her to the vet. Your vet could give her some fluids that will give her strength, and probably some ocytocin, which will help her lay her eggs. If she hasn't eaten in a week and is really weak, an operation to remove the eggs would kill her. I'm sorry to say this but there is a high chance your female won't make it. But the sooner you take her to the vet, the better chance she has to live. I do hope you have a vet there though. Good luck.

So you are saying these eggs that she did not drop the first time?
A vet is definitely in order here - ASAP. Not sure if you have followed this forum lately but there have been some sad occurences due to this. Do you have a good herp vet? If not find your local society. here are some sites to help you locate one. Scroll down to your sate and go from there.

thanks for the advice i took her to the vet today. She is not egg bound. they think she might have a infection. they are treating her for the night.

You said..."I bred her a couple of months ago and she laid eggs
i haven't bred her since, and now she is gravid"...its quite
likely that she has retained sperm. You said..."she has dug two
holes and nothing has happened. i have felt her sides and i can
feel eggs. Is there anything i can do?" If she was digging,
she should/would be getting ready to lay more eggs. A female
often digs more than one hole...especially if she sees you
watching her, before she lays her eggs. A female might abandon
one hole and start digging another if she see you watching
her too. IMHO its because she thinks that the hole you saw her
digging is then an unsafe place to lay eggs.A female often takes
more than one day to dig the hole too.

In another post you said..."She is not egg bound.they think she
might have a infection. they are treating her for the night".
I hope that the vet provided her with a place to dig/lay eggs
while she was with him/her....and if she still hasn't laid them
that she will go back to the digging and lay the eggs in
spite of being disrupted. Its unfortunate timing that you/the
vet had to interrupt her digging.

How is she now? Did the vet find out what kind of infection it
was?

I hope all will work out okay for your chameleon!
