Question about Reptomin. Help If you can please.

SlipKorn Jun 29, 2003 03:23 PM

Does Reptomin get stale or go bad in anyway? If it does then how long does it take? I'm planning on buying a pretty good bit of it and I want to know how long it will last. The store I get it from often sells out of it and it takes a while for them to restock it. They just got a new shipment and I was planning to buy most of it. Thanks.

I wouldn't worry too much if it would go stale, a turtle will eat just about anything.

if you are worried about getting a timely supply of turtle feed, you can check out cheaper options like NASCO turtle brittle (you can order it online from the nasco web site), or ordering mazuri foods (made by purina). Both come in sizes that are from medium to humongous and are cheaper than buying reptomin from a pet store.

Buy the smaller container, from the supplier with the best turnover and use it fast if you have to feed it at all. He sees so many turtles that have vitamin deficiencys and it is his feeling that the prepared foods just lack a lot. I would not ever feed them exclusively and personally haven't fed them in years. I only have a couple of turtles and usually supply them with live foods and some frozen foods.
So, yes, they go stale and turn into basically flavored cardboard if you keep them too long. And maybe they have changed but they didn't used to put a date on them.

I'm only planning to get about a 3 month supply. I don't feed them only sticks. I have 9 turtles and they go through alot of sticks but I feed them other things just as much as I do sticks. Let's see I have.....

3 Map Hatchlings
1 Adult Map Male
2 Softshell Hatchlings
1 Softshell 1 year old about 3 inches
1 Cumberland Slider 1 year old about 3 inches
1 Cumberland Slider 4-5 months old about 2 inches

I feed them sticks, live worms, live minnows, live small crayfish, raw shrimp, and veggies. I kinda stopped on the shrimp because it makes the water very dirty and oily.
