Black snake-yellow stripe----question???

swtcharity1 Oct 27, 2004 12:02 PM

Hi everyone!! I was hoping someone could help me out with some information, since you guys seem to be the experts around here. I was walking towards my apartment earlier today and saw a tiny (what I assume to be a baby) snake on the sidewalk. So small, in fact, that I thought it was a worm at first. It was solid black with one solid yellow ring right below it's head. I've seen lots of snakes before, just not one with one little stripe that I can remember, and I wouldn't trust myself to remember what kind is what except for a chosen few. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what kind of snake it could be and if it's dangerous. I have a new puppy and would hate for something to happen to it when I walk it. Thanks for any info you can provide!!!

Thanks for the quick response and for the information. I think you're right on that. I looked up ring snakes, and although I could only find pictures of adults, it looks pretty close. And, from what I read about them, it seems pretty likely that it would be hanging out there, since I swear it's the lizard capital of the world around there!!! Thanks so much! I feel so much better and the snake is so much cuter to me now that I know it won't go after my little puppy!!! I'm also glad I didn't accidentally step on it (which could have been likely, it being so small, if I didn't always have to be on the lookout for the hundreds of lizards darting under my feet when I'm walking already). I hope I get to see it again now and check it out better. I didn't want to get too close at first in case it was aggresive or venomous.

Oh those places are only on the other side of the country from me!! I'll be right there! LOL
Wellwe are SUPPOSED to have ringnecks here. But none of the herpers here have ever found one. We are doubting that they really even exist here anymore. Perhaps they USED to, but we doubt there are anymore. And if they are still here, they are very scarse. Bummer.

LOL

Well first off, I live in Idaho now. Just grew up in SanDiego. And all the spots I used to go there all have houses built there now. I hate SanDiego.

But here in Idaho there are TONS of reptiles!!! It is so awsome. Course I also like going down to Nevada and Arizona too. They not only have alot of snakes, but also alot more species.
Least here I know exactly where to go to find them.

Secondly, I hate to upset you, but I am happily married. though my husband isnt a herper and thinks I am totally nuts. lol Dont know what he would say about all that though. Good to know I havent lost any of my looks being married though. I'll take those compliments any day!

Aww...I feel bad that I saw it now, when I wasn't even looking for it or knowing what I was looking at!!! That's a bummer that you haven't ever seen one!

I do snake removal and I see them all the time in California, especially the San Diego type.

Send some this way!!! :D
Maybe we could repopulate this place. But then, I doubt it. They would prolly be found by the herpers so quick and snatched up we would never even see one again. Well send me one anyhow.
What part of Cali you from? I grew up in SanDiego. Used to love to go out by the Salton Sea. TONS of snakey out there. Tons.
Or used to be anyhow. It has been about 5 years since I was last there. I miss it!!

It could also be a neonate DeKays. They are born with a dark charcoal coloring and also have a ring around their necks. Pretty close to a neonate ringneck.
The DeKays are also harmless and eat slugs and worms.
