Skin/Scale Damage

fafnir Oct 27, 2004 01:02 PM

Hello all!

I have a couple of CWDs in a very large viv. It's 7 high, 8 wide and 4 deep so there is plenty of room. There is a waterfall/pond area that is about 60 gallons with live fish and whatnot. Lots of fake plants and good lighting. They seem to love it.

The problem (maybe it is a problem) that we have is that the male is constantly jumping the female for some action. I assume this to be normal, however she has quite a bit of scale loss on her crown. Recently he scratched the ridge above her eye and now that looks like a grey slash as well. I am wondering if this sort of scale damage is common/acceptable. I think it may be the fact that she cannot get away (she always runs until after the deed and then SHE follows HIM everywhere).

Just wondering. She has never been ill or bled or anything- it just detracts from the aesthetics.

Any thoughts or experiences?

My female got that damage too. The only way to prevent it is to house them separately. It helps to have more than one female too, so he can spread his love around, lol.

Thanks for the info.

I am loathe to get a new dragon because they are so hard to sex when young. I do not want to get attached to a male and have to give him away. I also do not want to seperate them since they have such a nice enclosure - I don't have room for another one of those.

I read in one of your posts that you gave your dragons away. Is this the case?

thanks again

Yes, we had made a whole room just for them, but with the impending arrival of our son we were forced to give them away. I found a good home for them with a breeder.

I'm just interested in how your pond is set up.
