can a sunroom provide sufficient uva/uvb?

unchikun Oct 27, 2004 01:59 PM

for craps and giggles, i was checking out real estate listings, and, looking at a place with a sunroom, i thought about how cool that would be if your could keep your tort in one (not that i'd use it myself, having skin cancer in my family), if it would provide sufficient levels of beneficial rays. then it'd just be a matter of space and temperature, and would be awesome for the wintery months.

or would the glass interfere, and maybe not let all/any/enough rays through?

anyone know? thanks!

i tried google, and in case anyone else wondered, a few different sites (both medical and relating to reptile husbandry) said that glass doesn't allow uvb to pass through. oh well... it was a nice thought, though! i still think he'd enjoy the view, as much as he likes to peer out of his tank.

If the sun room is a glass addition to the house the answer is no I can't be used as a tortoise enclosure with out bulbs BUT if its a plexiglass or plastic greenhouse they are commonly used in europe with good results. Plastic will screen out the UV from a light bulb but not the intensity of the sun, enough rays will get in to keep reptiles healthy.

hey presto: how about a convertable roof like the one stadium by the CN tower (whatever that name is) in Toronto
