I think my adult bts ate my baby bearded dragon

rich_123 Jun 29, 2003 03:59 PM

I kept them in separate plastic containers that were right beside each other. I stupidly kept the containers unlidded since I use heat lamps for them.
I just got back from the movies and my bts was roaming around. I look inside the BD's enclosure and the paper towels I used for substrate were shifted around everywhere and there was a bit of feaces in there that the BD couldn't have made. I believe the BTS escaped from his enclosure into the BD's and then ate him, got out of that enclosure and began to roam around the room until I got back.
I suppose I should be thankful that the BD was just a normal that costed me $20 instead of one of those $100 ones. I'm still very upset about my BTS's actions even though he was just acting naturally. Now I have to think of a way to keep him from escaping and at the same time mourn the loss of my poor BD. I'm hoping I'll one day see my BD sitting in the middle of the room when I walk into it, but I highly doubt that will ever happen. I still can't believe that something like this happened.

I dont know...i have 2 BTS and they do not look like they will like to eat living prey.My female loves boiled eggs and my male loves bananas.I just cant see them eating living prey.Perhaps in the forests when there is no food available.Even mealworms they dont like to eat.I think you will probably find your BD wandering around your place.Did you see any blood?

rich_123 Jun 30, 2003 01:02 AM

I expected some disbelief. I have trouble believing it myself. There was no blood but the walls of the enclosure are just way too tall for the BD to simply escape out of, though he did have a short perch. I hope that you're right about the BD escaping, but I seriously doubt it. I'll keep my eyes peeled for the BD every time I walk into the room, but I don't think I'll ever see him again whether he was eaten or just escaped.

I apologize if some of my words seem snotty or rude. I assure you that it is unintentional.

As I mentioned earlier, I think you were right. While BTS seem to be so docile, the fact is that they are often a wolf in sheep's clothing. Many of them relish live food, (hawk moths, large Grasshoppers, Snails, rat pups), while many more others simply have a dislike for other lizards. Both senerios often end up the same. Most of my BTS go crazy for anything that moves. They seem to become a different lizard (like Jeckle and Hyde).
I have put crickets in with babies, and it turns what was a bunch of shy timid little 2 day old BTS babies into blood thirsty carnivorous Velosa Raptors. I hate to say it, but I fear for the worst, and I hate to give toy false hopes. I am afraid the butler did it (the butler being the BTS.)

Boy, that was a fast response. I just made that reply 10 minutes ago and I look and there's your response.

I don't really have high hopes of seeing the BD alive again either since I really think that he was eaten. I still want to keep that small glimmer of hope by simply scanning the room each time I enter and leave. It may be wasted effort but if by some small miracle that the BD is alive, I want to catch sight of him before he's able to scurry off. But overall I know the truth, he's gone and all I can do is just move on.

One good thing about this mistake and all mistakes is that I will learn from it. Things could have been much worse. I guess that's the good thing about making mistakes, you learn from them and you do everything in your power to prevent them from happening again (most of the time).

BTW I set up the BTS's enclosure to where I have a lid on his container but still provide him with a flourescent light source. Instead of a heat lamp, now I use heat tape. Now hopefully everything will be alright in the long run.

Like you said, it could have been worse. Is the BTS a bit plumper. I will tell you after the monitor situation, mine was very uh, Fat... Anyway do not beat yourself up over it.

rich_123 Jun 30, 2003 11:03 AM

I suppose he is a little more plump, but he always appears to be so. I just hope my BTS appreciates the fairly expensive meal that he received.

I checked on my BTS today and there was a stool in the enclosure. In the middle of the stool was one of my poor BD's front legs. There's no mistaking it. I didn't think the BD would go through the digestive tract this quickly. Oh well, at least I now know the hurtful truth of my BD's fate once and for all.

I found out my dog had eaten my daughter's little white rabbit the same way a few years ago!Its a shock, isnt it? Poor BD!

Now im worried with my BTS babies. If they have any, lol! Will they eat their own babies?

james Wilson Jun 30, 2003 12:47 AM

Rich, I am sorry that happened, do not get your hopes up about finding him sitting in the middle of the room. He is more likely to show up in the middle of a pile of BTS poo. I had a similar situation with a baby savanah monitor that was eaten by my first pet BTS. I had just moved (big shock) and The monitor was in a tub like your BD was in. This tub was on top of a pet carrier that served as temporary housing for my first pet BTS. The monitor got out of the tuband went into the carrier through the bars, and was eaten. A small bloody mess was all that remained. We all make mistakes. Some of them just really suck.
