uromagnus Oct 27, 2004 04:45 PM

My uro has lost almost complete use of his aft legs!

this is the 3'rd day he is in this condition. it may be longer since he stayed in his hide for 2 days prior

he has sustained no trama that i know of

he has always appeared in good health to me. i feed a varried diet and he gets urodust and calcium

the ONLY change i made this past week was to add bee pollen to his food since he is so picky i thought he may try more of a variety of what i offer.(he got spoiled from a summer of his fav flowers)

so u do not get made that i am just now posting... i found this out monday eve 1 hour before i left for the airport and just now got back. i only had time to call the guy i bought him from.

any clue as what has happened here or advice?

i am freaking out!

aft legs- erm whats that? does he try to walk at all? dont use bee pollen all the time, just every second or third feeding.

and btw, are you from morris town? or is there a morris city that i dont know of?

shootist Oct 27, 2004 07:52 PM

oops nevermind i thought i saw city, not cty... now i got it, morris county

he pulls himself along with his front legs. the back ones just kinda lay there. i can not figure out if he can move his tail at all but i do not think that he can. i find it hard to believe that he suffered a trauma to his spine or that area since i did not drop him and he can not fall far in his tank when he plays. i found an old post that mentioned something like this from being impacted so now i am at a loss.

yes.. close to morristown.

something very useful on impactions ! Try it, if you do not get results, call the Vet!

Thnx so much for the info. Read the link on impactations and that sure seems to be his symptoms right down to the leg twitch. I gave him a nice long hot soak and rubbed his belly. Turns out the herp vet is 2.5 miles from my house and I intend to have him there tomorrow. Thanks again. - Mike and Magnus

I'm sure the Vet will tell you what you need to hear.

But I think the 6 hours without heat light, should be fine , as opposed to leaving him, maybe with someone who does not know how to deal with his problem. Its great you care so much to take him.

Years ago, I took my egyptian uro and bearded dragom from NJ to North Carolina for a week trip. They slept all the way there.

And were fine set up with their basking lights when we arrived.

I brought already sliced up salads, for the week in baggies, in a cooler till we got there and refrigerated them. Worked out great!

Good luck and like I said in email, please let us know waht the Vet says.

take him to a vet because if it is an impaction, i am not saying it is, then you will need some help getting all that stuff out. i think loss of limb movement can also be a sign of MBD, either way he really needs to see a vet

yes it is a sign of mbd and inpaction which both can be very serious. i would try a vet as soon as possible also i would try giving him a warn soak to see if he will go to the bathroom. oh yeah ....has he gone to the bathroom at all?

no.... he has not gone poop yet. he does urate though. generally seems to be in better condition (by his activity) and his legs no longer just hang and drag they have a 'bit' of movement and look normally placed.

i also do not feel anything like a blockage. he has a vet appt today.

here is my other BIG problem. i am leaving for a 6 hr car trip early in the morn. (i can not change these plans). depending what the vet says i may have to take magnus with me. i know i can find some way to house him once there(thru monday) and bring his basking light/s.

but what about a 6 hr ride w/o heat like a basking lamp?

i don't know how to make a link, so if you scroll down the page to oct 14ish there is a post called "emergency kit" by pgross. she has an idea in there and i am sure if you email her, she would give you more details about it.

Thanks for the info everyone.

I just got back from the vet. They took x-rays, blood work and enema.

There is no major blockage but there is something that shows up in 2 areas in the rectum. Looks to be calicum deposits and possibly some sand. Doc will not know till it comes out but she thinks it's calcium as sand usually looks granular.

Blood results not back yet and his bones look good except for a slight dip in the spine at the base of the tail.

Doc said I may be giving too much calcium supplements and told me to get him out in the sunlight whenever possible.

Otherwise he seems to be a healthly Uro that needs to poop.

As for my road trip... I decided to leave him at the vet till Tues so they can work on the blockage and make sure he eats. For the extra $100.00 I felt that it was well worth it.

Will update next week on the results and if he is able to move his hind legs.

Happy Halloween - Mike
