LIGHTING

aliaime Oct 27, 2004 06:51 PM

I recently read a message stating over the mesh hood lighting for a tank is a no-no. Is that correct? I am using a 75watt lightbulb for a 55-gallon tank encasing a guyanese red-tail boa. Is that ok? Also I am using an ultrasonic fogger for humidity purposes. Currently, the fogger is on an automatic timer set to go off at 6:00am to 8:30 am every morning. Is that ok? Please respond asap-1st time on forum

I personally do not like the bright incandescent lights for heat. The dry things out too much and have the potential to cause burns. Even with it being outside the wire mesh the mesh itself can get hot enough to cause the burn. I use small incandescent strip lights from Wal-Mart to light my cages. They provide a very subtle light with a series of tiny bulbs in a row. The light is muted and not very bright, as it would be in most of the natural range of BCI (except for Mexican BCI) and adds very little heat. Most of the heat that I used is under tank heat set to 95 degrees F for the hot spot. No burns just nice warmth if the snake needs it and I use a misting bottle to raise humidity about 4 x per week.
Thanks
