Yeah they tend to be snappy...Mine wasn't really 'jumpy,' but she wasn't calm either...she was really nervous but not squirmy; for a while, she'd strike at anything that moved.

but...
After several weeks of setting her in my lap as I watched TV for a while, she started to calm down a lot and she rarely gets nasty with me these days

And I've heard that a lot of them like to spray as well as bite. Daphne has never sprayed me but people say they'll do that to you so watch out.

Think of bloods as 14-year-old-girls who are self-conscious & defensive about everything. They get huffy puffy, flatten out & may even bite, but their whole motivation behind it is fear - simply afraid you're going to eat them. It generally keeps up for a couple of weeks/a month until they figure out you're harmless, then you get to see their real personality come out...and usually it's AWESOME!

Just my $.02

you want to keep baby blood or a 14 year old girl. Man I wish I had this info when I was 14...Oh well I 'll just store it away for 13 or so years......... Love the analogy K

Just like with any animal, your snakes will have their individual temperments as well. When I went to pick out my baby blood, I asked the breeder about temperament first. He pointed out the little girl who would curl up and hiss when he moved his arm, and then picked up his favorite. She was his favorite for 3 reasons, a melting stripe, being a good eater, and having a mellow temperament. This is the one I got, and I'm very glad I did. The first week I had her she was VERY nervous. Her muscles were tense, and she'd hyperventilate. I accidentally moved to fast twice during our first handling session, and she jumped and ran both times. This is when handling experience comes in handy. Bloods aren't good first snakes for a reason.

Its been a month now, and she will let me pick her up, move her around, and she'll sit in my lap as long as I can sit still. I'm not worried about her biting because our first encounters were good, and I picked for temperament as much as any other trait.

Like Kara said, the little guys just don't want to get eaten. If you keep this in mind, you shouldn't have to worry (too much) about getting bit. However, all snakes are wild animals, so if you don't want to get bit, don't get a snake...
