Hibernation-Confused

Snakesta44 Oct 27, 2004 08:33 PM

As you might have guesed, i'm a first time snake owner, and i'm very confused about hibernation. First of all, what is the difference between hibernation and burmation. Which is the best for my yearling florida kingsnake. Do i need to take her out of her cage. If not, how will i cool her down when the room her cage is in has heat? Do you ever not hibernate a kingsnake.

Hibernation and brumation are the same thing, you only need to brumate her if you intend to breed her,or she quits eating. You would have to move her to a unheated room, after not feeding her for at least 2 weeks to clear out her digestive system. Then you would keep her at around 55F for about 2-3 months.I usually start in December and brumate until March.

I have no intention of breeding her, and she's eating fine. Thanks for the help.

If the snake is only a year old, there is no need to brumate. Usually brumation starts after the snake is 3 years old to push breeding.
