brumation ??????

pogo_the_dragon Oct 27, 2004 08:58 PM

I asked this before but really need a opinion....Pogo turned 1 years old Sept 5th. In the last few weeks he's really been withdrawn. Doesn't eat much. Wants to stay hidden out of lights way. Does this mean he's wanting to brumate? Is he old enough for that? And if it's possible he is what do I do from this point? His lights are on from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. a day f.y.i....Anything else you could tell me would be helpful. I am without a car right at the moment and the nearest vet is 1 hour away so before the advice of taking him to the vet is offered believe me I know and it's just too difficult to get there so I'd like to rule out this brumation thing first.....

he's not too young to brumate, my dragon brumated before she was a year old (about 10 months when she started). If he is not losing weight I would say he is brumating. However it he starts to lose alot of weight, then take him to a vet.

your dragon will let you know if he is hungry by showing interest in food, offer some food each day and note his reaction. you may wan to note when he has last pooped and eaten. possbly a warm soak a few times to help him pass any partly digested food and to help be sure he's not lacking in water.

if he seems to have pooped and not eaten and keeps hiding then you can run less lights and see if he can hunker down in a favorite hide spot. let that stay cool and dark. from time to time he will come out and give you a look that you will know means "Hey wheres my food" he will eat, bask, poop and then go back down for a while.

dragons vary on how much time they sleep ....
some just seem to get lazy, some go out like a coma for as long as 6 months.... time will tell what your bd wants to do.

and have a fecal done just to be safe.
(parasites can make a dragon act this way)
