Spilotes Question re: cannibalism.

Matt Harris Oct 28, 2004 11:13 AM

Hi all,

I just imported a couple of cb Spilotes from Costa RIca. I was wondering whether any one has ever experienced cannibalism in juveniles housed together. I'm tentative on putting the two together they're 2mo old, and 6 mo. old.

While I've heard of them eating other snakes, I would like to hear from anyone who has witnessed cannibalism, or can point me to any articles covering it.

Thanks
Matt Harris.

Being such an usual snake, and an expensive one at that, I wouldn't chance it. On top of all the other numerous reasons why snakes shouldn't live together...the price would be the kicker for me.

i have housed my adult spilotes together for many years w/ no problem.....but i dont know about putting babies together esp. ones of different size. i used to keep a black racer in there w/ them and one time the racer got on the end of the wrong mouse. before i realized it, 3' of the racer was spilotes stomach bound! all of a sudden though, he spits the racer out and the soaked racer [after a moments hesitation] resumed hunting and promptly caught & ate another mouse!?!

I housed them separately, after moving a Pair of Bothrops asper into another enclosure.

Thanks.

that happened recently to my lic. sticks......pulled a foot of one out of anothers tummy.....mouse still attached and proceeded to eat it lol

it happens.....you have to watch carefully and be prepared with the cold water (or alcohol in extreme cases....like my 10 burm latching onto my hand for 20 minutes lol)

One is a 2month old, the other a 6 month old....mostly dark, not the bright yellow like Mexican Spilotes. I am still awaiting the breeder to give me the locales.

These snakes inhale mice like popcorn. Since I usually raise Pitvipers (lanceheads, bushmasters, palmvipers) I never realized how fast these snakes can swallow a mouse. The mice are gone before I can get another mouse out of the bucket. Awesome snakes! I hope to see a wild one next Spring in Costa RIca. Thus far, we've only found Pseustes.

I have heard stories of juvies attacking one another... but adult breeding pairs are no problem. I guess once they get to the breeding stage other instincts take over Good luck with them!

This is one of our CB babies produced this year.
