What morph is your meanest corn ever???

Darin Chappell Oct 28, 2004 12:17 PM

The absolutely meanest corn I have ever owned, or even seen, is a hypo het for bloodred female sub-adult.

She has bitten me ever since since got out of the deli cup in which she was shipped. She bites (and I mean multiple strikes at a time!) as hard and as fast as she can, all the while sliming you with musk. If that doesn't get you let her go, she either defecates or regurges on you.

Nasty, nasty, NASTY little snake!!!

Good thing for her, that her genetics are so important to me!

I am curious as to what other little nasties are out there. Any patterns to be found in possible genetic links?

...about 50% of the hatchlings I get from my ultramel male (regardless of the mother's temperment) are meaner than all get-out.

Still, nothing beats the adult sunkissed male that not only struck at me through the transparent side of his cage, but forced me to wear gloves because he'd bite and chew. (Guess who I don't own anymore?) The female sunkissed was marginally better.

Ah well...

This hypo het bloodred female of mine is unbelievable!

She strikes at me through the bin in which she is kept in the rack, even when its feeding time. I handle her every day, thinking that maybe she'll eventually calm down...uh...she isn't!

The other day, I took her out to feed, and she bolted when the bin was opened, mouth fully agape. I caught her by the tail and moved her to a place where I could more easily handle her. She smelled some of my clothes that were on the chair next to her position, and repeatedly struck my overalls. She just smelled "me" and nailed whatever it was as hard as she could.

I am not afraid of corns, obviously, but this bag is getting too much to handle. If her babies have this attitude next year, I won't be promoting that particular gene pool for any further breedings.

Good questions Darrin. Interesting thought on if certain morphs tend to have a certain personality trait. On the flip side of meanest corns, I read an article on Rich Z's website (Serpenco) where he talks about Amber Corns. Here's what he had to say.

Quote: "Although it's not a good practice to try to associate particular personality traits with animals such as snakes and especially relating to a particular cultivar, most individuals of the Amber corn are the most fearless of any of the corn snakes we have produced. They seem to have a highly developed curiosity about their surroundings and have absolutely no fear of being handled. Whenever someone asks us for the most mellow and laid back of any of the cultivars of the corn snake, THIS is the one that always comes to mind.
Now I always have people asking me "What's you favorite corn snake." And I always hem and haw about an answer. But recently it dawned on me that the Ambers have to be my favorite. The coloration is subtly beautiful and the personalities are incredible. I truly regret that I haven't held back more of them over the years" End Quote.

I thought that was a neat comment from Rich and got me wondering if other Corn Morphs had certain perks or traits, as in good feeders vs poor feeders, large size or small size, among some of the traits. Very interesting and some good questions

I have a striped snow... it's the meanest snake I've ever owned... and I've even kept wild caught black racers and copperheads. She's still young though.... hopefully she'll grow out of it...

>Nasty, nasty, NASTY little snake!!!

This one, a normal het Lavender is exactly the same as yours except for the regurging. She has never regurged on me. But everytime I handle her I get bitten, pooed and peed on. Since she was a hatchling.

>>I don't really count hatchlings because they all tend to be a bit jumpy.
So, all I can say is none of mine are mean.
I have 37 snakes at this time 32 of which are Corns.
Those 32 range from hatchlings to 3 or 4 years old.
I only got 7 of these as adults or sub-adults the rest I either raised from hatchlings or still are hatchlings.
I always handle all of my snakes at least a couple of times a week.
The closest I have to "mean" snakes are one normal that gets a little defensive when I first reach in to pick her up but she never has bitten me.
I have one female amel (one that I got as an adult) that would get tense and form the "S" as if to attack for the first month or so after I got her but the only bite she ever inflicted was to one of my dog's nose.
He likes to sniff the snakes and beardies when I feed them or clean their habitats. He got a little too close to the amel and she drew blood when she got him on the nose.
But, I can handle any and all of my corns without getting bitten. Including her.
I have a nice anery that also came to me as an adult. He does the "twitch" when I pick him up but settles quickly and never bites either.
All my sub-adults and adults that I raised from hatchlings are just as docile as ever. I don't even think I could make them bite without some serious effort.
Now, I do have an Evergaldes rat that will bite me every time I pick him up.
He calmed down for a while but got mean again.
He will do everything in his power to get away when I pick him up including biting and musking.
But I will get him tame one of these days.
I will just keep handling him until he settles down.

I have 9 corns and I really wouldn't consider any of them mean.
My male motley has struck several times , but like Jimmy said he is a hatchling and I expect that. I have an 03 creamsicle that is the hardest to handle she does the twitch thing and will try to discourage me by bumping me off with a body coil, oddly enough when she is in the blue I can pick her up without the twitching or bumping, go figure. Now if you want to talk mean, there is my eastern king, just plain hates life LOL.

I had a pair of Miami's, the first snakes that I ever got to produce offspring from, and they were downright nasty! I'm talking Texas Rat, Amazon tree Boa nasty, but the amazing thing was that her first clutch was 22 fertile eggs!
I called them Ghengis and Xioxie (pronounced So-She)
Not really much of a story, and they weren't officially "Miamis" but they definitely had the look of Miamis, and they were the most aggressive @%^@%*#$&$!% corns ever.

This was a BIG dark female corn, wildcaught I assume. She was just plain MEAN, period. She was also one of the biggest corns I've ever had at around 50 inches (estimated since getting her to hold still was impossible). She bred for me, laid about 30 eggs and 26 surviving hatchlings. I sold her to someone who swore he could tame her, I was like "whatever gimme my $20 and have your fun". She ate good, bred good, but would not tolerate handling at all, biting, musking, pooping, and if she'd eaten recently regurgitating.
