Try dipping the pinks or fuzzies in chicken broth. Worked for mine!

Hi,

I just got my first western hognose about 3 months ago, and just a few days ago i finally got her to eat a pinkie. after the almost 3 months of tuna and frog scenting and watching her not eat anything at all, i read someone had given theirs feeder fish. so i figured i would try with just one rosy red, just to get her to eat SOMETHING. turns out she went right for it and gulped it down. so i waited another week, thawed out a frozen pinkie, and she went right up to it and ate it. I dont know if feeding her the fish had anything to do with her eating the pinkie, maybe it got things goin inside her or something since she hadnt eaten anything at all for that long, but at least she is eating now and i know that feeder fish arent the best choice as food for them, which is why i only gave her one tiny one to see what she would do.

Take in mind that this is getting to be the time when snakes start to wind down usually, especially if the temperatures or day/night cycle around them fluctuate. Hognose are especially bad for going of feed and they will do it randomly at different times of the year, but especially winter and spring. If the snake isn't losing weight quickly, then don't worry about it.

Andy, I'm not well versed when it comes to nasicus and simus, but for some reason I've never had a problem with platyrhinos and sympatric amphib prey (regardless of season).
Are you back to normal? Shane

snakeguy88 Nov 01, 2004 10:03 PM

Not back to normal per se...been meaning to send out those emails to you and Jason but I have literally 5 min of free time each day, most of which isn't spent on the computer (Making up a full week of school is hell). Pain is still bad in the index finger. As for the hognose part, I have had easterns stop feeding for extended periods, even when trying to feed toads. Just the time of year. My new nasicus just stopped feeding and my new eastern hasn't fed yet (even on frogs and toads and pinks). But especially some of the males I have kept will not eat for a long time during the early part of the year.

I've never had the problems you've experienced. The platyrhinos I've kept in the past were always willing to take any frog or toad I offered (granted I kept local hognose and fed them local prey). I have heard of problems with feeding them prey that wasn't local. Easy, easy, captives (at least in my experience).
Glad you're not much the worse for wear. Kenny and I are quasi planning a trip for Necturus beyeri and maculosus. If you're interested I'll keep you informed. Necturus compete with Heterodon in my favorite herp book. Shane

5 weeks is not very long for hognoses. Keep accurate weekly weights on it and only try to feed it once a week.

mine is a big problem eater but I can always count on him eating an anole if I get to worried. I figure that if he eats one big anole a mnth Im happy, and it only costs 4.00 each time..btw he is only around 9inches right now so an anole is a big meal..
