Can I safely keep an American toad over the winter?

hoffalupagus Oct 28, 2004 01:41 PM

I recently caught an American toad (in Ohio) and have grown fond of the little guy. I've set up a 10-gallon terranium with shelter, water, and crickets for him to eat. I would like to keep him as a pet, but I don't want to risk his safety. Can I keep him over the winter without the warmth of the house during the winter months affecting his health?

Yes(if proper temps can be maintained(look for a caresheet on that, don't know the correct temps for the species off the top of my head)), however it may help to hibernate for breeding purposes.
