Substrate

Screameleons Oct 28, 2004 02:53 PM

Hi all,

I don't have much experience w/ dart frogs, but I do know that you guys use a special substrate for your vivariums. What is a safe substrate that is soil like, and can be purchased in large quantities. I don't need the most expensive, but I need something safe.

Thanks for the help guys.

Vincent

Actually, the substrate that I use for my darts is the same stuff I used for my chameleons once. Bed-a-beast coco fiber has worked awesome for me. You can use it dry in chameleon/reptile cages, but you can also wet it down and use it wet. Some people don't like it all that much because if it gets too wet or sits in water it starts to rot a little bit, and turns the water tea colored. I just keep it on top of a layer of gravel for drainage and it works awesome.

The "special" stuff that you're probably thinking of is called LYCA or something like that, it's basically clay. I've never used it, because it's harder to find, more expensive, and also because I've just had such good experience with coco-fiber.

Blackjungle.com sells LECA... I haven't used it myself yet but I am considering it. Check out the site for more info.
