Housing chameleons

VTEC Oct 28, 2004 06:13 PM

I know the answer to this question is going to be no but I'm gonna ask anyway. Is it possible to house a leopard gecko and a chameleon in the same enclosure? I thought that since leos stay on the ground and chameleons are up in vines that it may work. I really want a chameleon but I already have a leo and dont really want to get rid of him. I also dont want my room full of seperate enclosures. Has anyone else been in this situation? What did u do?

It won't be possible for one reason which is the fact that your leo might become your chameleon's food, if the size is right. It does sound like an attarctive idea, but chameleons are such antisocial creatures. the only other living things that are in its enclosure are either food, or a mate for breeding purposes.

Big big nono.
Chameleons should not be housed with other animals. It would be nice if they could to save space and resources. But Chameleoncrow was right, he could very well try to eat your leopard gecko at some time. Plus there is the issue of diseases that the two species could pass on to one another. That, plus competition over food and just general stress are all some things that could happen.
Arent Leopard Geckos also situated in a different type of habitat? (not sure, dont know much about them ) But just too many factors here to be able to work around sorry.

If your still interested in getting a chameleon there are enclosures that dont take up much room. 2x2x4 cages are the norm it seems and they fit nicely into corners for example. Or you could just make your own. Its up to you!

Hope some of this info helped...

I have both and they both require such different care that even if you COULD keep them together without the other reasons listed, you wouldn't be able to provide decent habitat for both. The humdity would probably make your leo sick. Also, they could make eachother sick from bacteria transferred. also, they would stress each other out. Honestly if you have no way to house them separately I would NOT get a cham. I knwo what you mean about space... i have 2 geckos and 1 large cham and 3 leaf chams... my room is all animals pretty well. What size of enclosure do you have your leo in? My chams cage doesn't take up too much room... they are aboreal animals so they need taller cages. It actually takes up less floor space then my leo, she's in a 35 gal tank.
