Lesser X Ghost babies

designersnakes Oct 28, 2004 06:17 PM

We just hatched these guys out a week ago or so. We were fortunate to get 4.0 Lessers and .2 sibs. They were a product of breeding a Lesser male to a nice yellow ghost female. They do look a little different than our other Lessers we hatched out but that could just be the variation in the mutation. Unless the Ghost does give it a different kind of coloration, like the Axanthic does to the Pastel (Joliff). I can't wait to breed these guys into a handful of our Ghost females later in the breeding season....hopefully!
We still have several clutches of some cool crosses cooking and due to hatch in the next several weeks. Maybe something extra special will pop out!!

Thanks for looking,

Jack

What exactly does "lesser" mean in morphs?

RandyRemington Oct 29, 2004 08:25 AM

"Lesser" is only used to refer to the Lesser Platinum, I’ve not heard it used with other morphs.

Ralph Davis imported the original Platinum male and half of his offspring looked a lot like him but where not as extremely light colored so rather than calling them "Platinum" he called them "Lesser Platinums" and it often gets shortened to just "Lesser". He has since produced more Platinums, three by breeding Lessers to their normal looking siblings and three more by breeding the original Platinum to Lessers.

Ralph posts his breeding results each year so anyone can go read them and figure on this stuff.

I believe that a Platinum is a Lesser that is also homozygous for a dilute gene. The lesser gene it's self appears to be a co-dominant gene with leucistic as the homozygous. The odd thing is that the dilute gene doesn't appear to show up without the lesser gene (i.e. some of the many offspring from the Platinum’s normal looking offspring bred together should be homozygous dilute but they don’t seem to show it).

Platinums....may not be exact, but I bet they will be dam! close.

Well done....Congratulations!

I personally believe that most recessive traits have SLIGHT visual markers that are not always 100% sure indicators but it is fun playing the odds & finding out if you guessed right. I also believe that they are more noticeable when mixed w/ co-doms.
