chondros in tub racks?

cousinmike Oct 28, 2004 09:42 PM

Hey Chondro People,
Could chondros be temporarily kept in a rack system cage in a sterlite or rubbermaid container with no perch, just substrate and a water dish? I've heard yes from some people, and absolutely not from others. Any feedback from you chondro pros would be appreciated!
Cheers,
Mike C

I have a female that absolutely refuses to eat if she's in a "cage". I've had her in a tub since she hatched and she's getting her first go at breeding this winter. Whoever told you chondros CAN NOT be kept in tubs, doesn't know. Some will thrive in tubs......others will not.......but most don't care.

Good luck.

Hey Brandon...just curious? What heat source are you using in those tubs? I can't make it out? I just set up a large tub with a ceiling heat mat up over half the perch area (that supposedly can't burn the animal-got it taped to the lid about 6" above), and it's making me nervous. Thanks, M

Well, I can't really comment on your question since I don't have a heat source attached. I don't normally use any heat on my chondros. My room temps are around 80-85 during the day and 76-80 at night. The only heat I would consider myself using, would be the light bulbs in some of my adult cages. I don't consider them a burn threat. I use low wattage bulbs from 7.5-40 watts depending on the size of the cage, and the time of year. This has worked for me for the last 6 years with absolutely no problems at all. Some will argue that light bulbs are bad, but I've never had a negative incident. I don't even use heat on my hatchlings and they are healthy and hungry all the time. Sorry for the ramble.

What size tubs are in the pictures... L x W x H? Also, what are the size of the Chondros in the those boxes? From the picture they look like small adults but it's hard to tell.

Chris, the tubs are sterlite brand 72 qt. and measure 16" w X 24"l X 17" t. The adults are a small male around 500-600 grams and the female on bottom is a upcoming breeder weighing around 1000 grams. I'm pretty happy with the rack. If I didn't like looking at the snakes so much, I'd probably just use them for all of my cages. But, there's nothing better than being able to see a beautiful chondro in full light and full view.

chondros need perches. The tend to get a little stressed without. The tubs in my pic can be purchased at Wal-Mart for $5 ea. The closet rod hangers are $1 pr. The perches are free from any live Maple tree. The total cost of the rack I put together was around $30 including the tubs. Have fun.
