Monitor lovers speak now!

RangerGrrl Oct 28, 2004 11:56 PM

Hey all,
As I've read this forum over a short time it becomes clear to me that you are passionate about your herps. Well, now is the time to speak out. Are you aware of the New York bill that could be passed into law by a week from now, BANNING large snakes and monitors?? This includes some of the most common monitor species, from what I read. If you are a New York herper, it is especially necessary that you contact the Governor's office to speak out before he signs the bill into law. If you're not from New York, it would still be good to write, as numbers talk. The Herp Laws forum has a link to the gov's office where you can email him a message. I think this is really important. The "general public" doesn't care if we can keep ouur pets. We have to speak up for ourselves. Thanks, everyone.

I thought NY already passed a bill last year?? Are they putting another one through again then?

Earlier this year, a bill aimed at banning "dangerous exotic animals", including all "members of the boidae" as well as the Nile, salvator, crocodile, and blackthroat/whitethroat monitors passed both the NYS Assemby and Senate (the two lawmaking bodies). Due to public outrage, NY governor Pataki sent the bill back to the Assembly for modification. The ban on all boidae was changed to include only anacondas, burmese pythons, reticulated pythons, African rock pythons, and amethystine pythons. The Nile, salvator, crocodile, and blackthroat/whitethroat monitors will still be banned if this bill is signed into law. The bill is currently on the Governor's desk, awaiting his signature or veto.

I wrote Gov. Pataki about this issue yesterday. I hope all other NYS herp keepers do so as well.
