Does colder weather mean less appetite?

syntax Oct 29, 2004 02:27 AM

i have 2 females about 5 months old. they've had a really healthy appetite for mealies, crickets, and waxworms. now that its beencolder, they tend to be quite lethargic and hardly eat. they have went down from 10 - 15 crickets or mealies each a night, to maybe 1 or 2 items. Is this normal?

If their tank is getting colder, it is likely that their appitites will drop. Make sure your tank is staying warm enough and they should eat normally. If it gets to cold they can't digest and will not eat.

. . . in the North country, it doesn't matter if you keep the heat up when it's cold - because leos will noticed the change in the photo-period and/or other internal indicators, and will slow down in their eating.

Not to fear - as long as they are healthy to begin with. When I noticed this happening, I could lengthen the time in between meals, and put less prey items in the tank. Some of my leos slowed down for months, literally, and at the end, weighed the same as at the beginning of the fast.

You gotta have the "zen" to know when to just relax and live in wonder over the complexities of nature.

Good luck.
