OH MY GODDNESS!! How DO people do it!

pythonmomma Oct 29, 2004 10:29 AM

I got another one today. I don't think this little girl is going to make it though. She has SEVERE mouth rot, MBD, broken ribs, and a respritory infection, and worms. She is in a NICE warm gace that is quiet humid by herself in a room completely away from my other iggs.

This little girl was found by the animal control curled uo and almost dead in one of the city parks. It has been in the low 50's here at night lately. I took her to the vet yesterday and had EVERY test they could do done. She does have a SMALL swivle in her spine, but the vet thinks there is hope.

Her medications include at the moment
panacure (first dose yesterday, 2nd on the 11th)
1cc Baytril (every other day for 8 days for the mouth rot and respritory)
probiocin 1g every other day, alternating with the antibiotics, so we don't get rid of all the good stuff
Force feeding because at 4 1/2 feet, she only weighs 3 pounds.

So, now, my BIG question. How do I force feed her without making her mouth flare up and bleed everywhere?
Also, do you all think it is worth it FOR HER to try all this, or should I give her to her second life?

She has a few moments of energy during the day, a few little movments every now and again. I wanna try with her, but I am affraid I am only torturing her.
Thanks for any help you have,

you can try getting baby food and using a very fine syrige(sp) and use that... or just try putting a drop on her mouth and she may lick it off.. i have also gotten pedialite and added watter to it to dilute it and i have used that.. it will help her get energy and help get her rehydrated..

I would try.. she may come around but it doesnt sound to good. the last two iggs that i resucued were very bad one i lost the first week but the other one the worse one lasted for a month and then lost teh battle. i belive it had kidney disease..

I have a recipe for food for sick buddies, but this iggs mouth is SO infected and sore, if I use a syringe, her mouth begins to bleed. I got a catheder(sp) today and am going to give it a try, I just can't get much weaker of a tube or she will be able to tear it. Thanks you guys for your supprt and suggestions.

If you are questioning whether it is worth it or not, look to her to tell you. Sometimes I have found that an animal that I would consider "saveable" has not been. I think it is all up to thier attitude and their "will to live." Let her tell you if she wants to continue this or not.

Now me personally, I really hope that she chooses to make the best of her situation and keep fighting the good fight.

As far as not getting her mouth all cut up and inflamed... you must get ood in her and I think the rest in secondary. I always hated m aking someones mouth bleed when they would thrash on chomp on the syringe... but it was all worth it in the end.

These are some of the recipies that we use at Kindred Spirits and I highly reccomend them. Please email me with any questions on the directions at Ellena_Thomas@yahoo.com.

Good luck to you and please keep us updated!

For force feeding you could try putting a flexible tube on the end of a feeding syringe. Try inserting this into the back corner of her mouth and squeezing a little bit in.

You are doing a really good thing, and even if she doesn't make it she was lucky to have found someone as kind as you!

Maybe for feeding her you could cut a straw and put the straw in her mouth because it is more flexible. Put the end of the syringe in the straw and try to force it through the straw. I know her mouth will collapse the straw, but maybe the force of the food will open it up enough to get it through.

I got a cathader(sp) from my vet office. It is a tube with some hles in the bottom that hooks on to a big syringe. I got about 1/4 cup of food in her this morning and am working on somemoe this after noon. She seems more lively today. maybe the heat and humidifier are helping. Thanks you guys for your support!
