Moving Chams?

JethrozMom Jun 29, 2003 06:24 PM

I just found out that we're moving to Houston in the beginning of september (i'm in dallas) I have a pair of Jacksons and im about to aquire a full grown male Veiled cham. (they were all a friend of mine's but he's moving to florida and can't take them with him.) What's the best way to move them? i know i have to keep them in the car where its air conditioned... for the Jaxx i thought i'd just get some of hte biggest gladware containers, poke holes in them, and put a moist paper towel in the bottom with a little dowel drilled through them to perch on, and for the veil i thought i'd get a bigger rubbermaid or sterelite box, drill holes in it, add a perch, and some moist paper towels in the bottom.

Do you guys think this will work? Better ideas? I'm open to anything.

its about a 5 hour drive, but i MIGHT have to keep them in their little containers for a day or two until we get the cages set up in the new place... i know they'll be stressed, but i know keeping them moist will help.

I'm a little scared to move them, i knwo theyre not always the easiest to keep..

Help!
Thanks,
Jamie

I would get a small gladware container, and exclude the perch. You want to eliminate open area that he might flop around in. Fill the majority of the container with moist towels and leave a little space in the middle for him to sit. I would get a container that was a solid color. (non-translucent) We want it to stay dark. Keep it out of the sun, and it should go OK.

I just re-read your post and noticed that you may need a few days before you get everything setup. I would not keep them in the small containers for any extended period of time. This is just to get chams from one place to another with as little stress as possible.
I ran into something similar a few years back, where I needed a temporary holding place until my cages were done being sanatized. I went to the dollar store, and got 8 plastic trash cans ($1 each) and put paper towels on the bottom, and a few branches in each one of the trash cans. Then I laid a 48" reptisun over all of the cans. This may get you by for a few days until you get setup, but for the effort to get this setup, you might as well setup the permanent enclosure.

Jamie A. Stine and the Gang-

I know you will not be shipping the chameleons, but there was an article in the Ezine on shipping chameleons and I think it will help you in packing them up correctly for the move. Click the link below. Hope this helps!
