Are red eyes a difficult species to keep??

AdamDispenza Oct 29, 2004 05:24 PM

I have had red eyed tree frogs twice and everytime they have with in a few months. I don't under feed them , nor over feed them. And I only buy Captive Bred animals. My tank set up is heavily planted with spagnum moss and gravel under that. They both had a small water bowl, not to deep, incase they wanted to soak. I always got pairs, because I've heard that they like to live in communities. I misted the tank at least twice a day. It never not to hot, but I did have a UV light on them during the day time. Always provide many hid spots and I never handled them, unless I had too. What could I have done wrong? Are these frogs just a hard species to keep? I always heard that these were fairly easy to keep. Thanks for any info in advance.

Red eyes are not particularly difficult to keep, but they are sensitve frogs that do not do well in less-than ideal conditions. What size enclosure were they in? A twenty-tall is generally said to be the minimum for them. What temperature were they at? They should be kept around 75-80 degrees F. What was their night time temperature? All their food items should be gut-loaded 24 hours before they are offered to the frogs. Also, did you supplement the food with calcium or vitamins? If so, how often? You should supplement 2 parts calcium to 1 part vitamins, 1 feeding per week. Did you buy them from the same dealer? What condition were they in when you bought them. Maybe you're buying them from a bad dealer. Were you using dechlorinated tap water or spring water? Did you notice any typr of sores or weird behavior before they died? This sounds like you're being drilled by a lawyer or something! haha. Sorry so many questions, just trying to cover all husbandry points.
