Ackies

sams43 Oct 30, 2004 06:10 PM

i am looking into getting an ackie in about a month or so and have been reading up and researching them for about 2 months. i was just wondering (from personal experience ...all you ackie owners) are they people friendly? i know that they are very active but will i be able to take it out and mayb handle it with out it trying to bite my arm off? like let it run around the room and mayb into the backyard.

thanks for any help

sam

I have a strong feeling if you took an ackie outside and let it lose, it would be the last time you'd see it.
These little suckers are faster than you would believe.
As for being people friendly, lets just say they aren't going to run and hide very often.

Mine are very people friendly; got them as babies, and allowed several months of just letting them adjust to my going in the enclosure for maintenance. One will still run sometimes, but the other one will just sit there and let me stroke it. Haven't tried to pick it up yet, but I think I could. The trouble is that the little things are like greased lightening. If one runs up your arm (and it will!) it could be gone in a snap. I'd re-think taking one outside, but most seem to tolerate handling well. And even as babies, they sure are not afraid of much. Very curious, gutsy little things when you consider how small they are.

Good luck,

Leslie

I would consider them people friendly. I have both yellows and reds and the my yellows are calmer than the reds. I can touch all of them and pick up and hold the yellows easily. The reds are more squirmy. I would never take them outside as they would be gone in a flash. These are fun little guys with the heart of a lion. I'm sure you won't be sorry. Good luck!

Since I order about 2000 crickets at a time for multiple monitors and frogs, it is a little hard to try to pinpoint one monitor. Each one has individual food needs, some eating more than others. Depending on your source for crickets, it should cost you around $15 for crickets and then if you feed pinkies, they can run from as little as .25 to $1.00 each, again depending on where you buy them. It is best to buy frozen pinkies from a reptile show, thereby eliminating the expensive shipping cost. Order the crickets from a cricket supplier rather than the pet shops. I live in Wisconsin so the Bug Company is the most reasonable for me, charging $16 for 1000 shipped and less if you order more. If you want pics of cages or more ackies, feel free to e-mail me and I will send them to you. Good luck! You will love your new ackie.
