A bit off topic but Exciting * Suess my emerald swift gave birth today :0)

PHEve Oct 30, 2004 10:42 PM

Suess, and her Hubby Grinch, are proud Emerald Swift parents

Suess the Mom, delivered 10 baby swifts, 2 were still born (born dead) but I managed after a couple hours to catch 8 little 1 inch whipper snappers!

They were difficult to hunt down and catch. The parents are in a 65 gallon reptarium, with tons of vines, plants, logs and branches.

The interesting thing was even though she just gave birth, the newborns were doing pushups on the sides of reptaruim, and the parents were TOO preoccupied with watching them.

I did not know if they would be snacks, Also the parents were doing push ups back, as if their territory was being invaded by unknown lizards. STRANGE, you would think they would accept their own . Kinda sad !

Anyway kids are safe and sound, have to see how they do, as I have heard it is a difficult thing to keep emerald swift young alive in captivity !

Thanks for sharing in the new birth story

That's a lot of little ones. Sounds cute how active they were at birth, interesting how they give live birth too. Take good care and hope they all fare well.

Geez, Eve! We need pictures!!

That's so cool that a lizard can have a live birth, I didn't know that! I'm going to go look up Emerald Swifts right now to see what kind of buggers you're talking about.

She was probably doing push ups because she was sick of carrying them around! "I've carried you long enough, get out of her!" Hehe

Computer crashed this weekend, we are kind of on here by the skin of our teeth, until a new hard drive is installed.NEXT WEEKEND Can't as of now use my camera, no downloads, maybe later.

I'm just happy to be on here at all. But the babies are doing well, zooming all over the reptarium. So very tiny, just to get one on your finger feels as though you will squish it.

I do not even want to handle them at this point, but I did get one on my finger and hand for a pic, just have to wait to download on to the stinky computer, hehehehe ! Was awesome to not have to wait for 50 -60 days for eggs, LOL just see them being born, very COOL !

My baby Anole is the same way. She feels like pudding, but the best way to handle her is to just let her walk on me. That would probably work for swifts too, wouldn't it?

it would not work Tony, they just run , like a streak they are gone, hehehehe.

I'm sure after they are around a few days they will start to relax a little. Suppose now they are afraid they will be eaten.

Soon they will know me. Oh and your question last night about putting swifts with collareds, I have known people who did it.
But its not a good idea, swifts are more nervousy quick moving lizards than our brave little collareds, hehehehe

I have not seen them eat yet!

That they can stay with collareds in their tank. I've actually seen it at a pet shop and the owner says they do great together. Then again, he's keeping two males in the same cage.

My collareds have eaten swifts before. Make sue they are large enough not to be eaten.

My children and I saw an Emerald Swift at our local Petsmart. they had three actually. One was a beautiful dark green and the other two were more brown.Anyway, we thought about coming home with the green one, but I asked the clerk if they like to be handled and he said no. Are they a look but don't touch kind of lizard? How is it they give live birth? What an interesting creature.
