cricket question and a little update on on new little boy

compasscreek Jun 29, 2003 07:49 PM

yesterday the whole way up the trail to pick up my client all i could thunk about was my new chameleon. it was a very welcome distraction, made time fly by. although i had dreams of white crickets on the inside of my tent! LOL. i got back today about noon dropped me pack and went straight to the cage to watch n=him for a bit. i opened the cage to take a couple pictures because he was right up front and showing a bit of color and he arched his back and puffed up a bit so i closed the cage and left him alone for an hour. during the daytime he stays mostly on one side of the cage and at night he goes to the same place on the other side of the cage.

cricket question:
how fast do they grow? i bought 60 of them and today they seem to have grown noticably.

Dennis-

I have plans to climb Mt. Whitney this summer if all goes as planed!LOL If not I will be fishing! I have noticed that my chameleons have a favorite spot in the cage during the day and at night when they sleep.

Crickets life span in optimal conditions is 6 weeks. If temps are cooler they will last longer and if food source is poor. There is a good article on breeding crickets in the Ezine, click the link to take a look. I have been playing around with them and the pinheads have been a welcomed food for my pygmy chameleons and saves me lots of money! Hope this helps

if you are planning on doing whitney it may be too late for this summer. it requires a permit because it is in a wilderness area. i've never been much of a "peak bagger". i had a personnal trip planned on the john muir trail but canceled to do a trip in canyonlands instead. not that the sierras arn't pretty and all, i tend to prefer north AZ and south utah.

All should have been taken care of already! I have a group I am going with and the permit has already been reserved for us, so I am told. It is a [bleep] trying to get access to climb it. That's why I say if all goes as planed!LOL If not we will be fishing.

i wish you luck! it certainly a beautiful area!...are you all doing it as a day hike or overnight/weekend? it may not be a problem for you but be aware of altitude sickness. it can ruin a guy's trip. i usually have trouble catching my breath at and above 10,000 feet. this past weekend i set up MY camp at 9200 ft. and took a lighter pack up to my client at 10,400(about 2.5 miles from my camp). this may sound funny but the views are definately better above 10k!

and if you don't make the trip the fishing up there is always good!
