new baby res questions

catnipcutie Oct 31, 2004 09:44 AM

I just got two baby res. One is two headed and the other is a regular res turtle for companionship. This is my first time having turtles so I have a few questions. The turtles are very small, a little bigger than a quarter and I am concerned about the depth of water that they need. I was told to only put about 1/8 inch of water in the tank right now so they wouldn't flip over and drown. Is that ok? I have to be especially careful with the two headed baby for that reason. They have a basking rock and they are kept in a heated environment. They haven't eaten yet but I think it's because they haven't adjusted to their new surroundings yet. Any advice would be great.

Hi,
I would keep them in at least 2 inches of water. That way, they should be able to swim without obstruction and not run into the flipping over problem. As the hatchlings age, you can increase the water as they become more proficient swimmers.

I would definately keep the 2-headed RES separately. It will need to be wathced very closely, as they are very delicate. I would keep the normal RES in at least 5 inches of water (more is better) and the 2 headed one in only about an inch of water, at least until it grows a bit. You need to watch the 2-headed very closely to make sure it is eating and growing etc.. Good luck.
