A first...

Yesterday we were cleaning out cages in preparation for hibernating the collection. We opened up one container and noticed unfertilized eggs in it (aka jelly beans). Upon cleaning out the container, there was a single baby garter in the substrate! We breed our adults in March so normally it takes 3 months to have their offspring (generally in June is when they are born). It took 7 months for this female to have her baby. Has anyone else had such an experience?

Well im not a snake wiz, but MAYBE... the female retained a sperm from March or whenever it was.

Was this the only litter this year for this individual snake? Do Garters ever have a second litter from a single mating like some snakes do?

Retained sperm was the first thing that came to mind. This was the first and only brood from this female. I have yet to have had a female produce 2 broods in one year from a single breeding, not to say that it couldn't happen though.

Did she breed last year? If so, and since she didn't produce young last year, I'd say that she just retained the sperm and put it to use this year.
