can you get iguanas to eat iguana pellots?

Like most rescues, my rescue, Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, works with a bunch of igs all the time. I generally feed them a mix of fresh greens, but I've also been trying to suppliment their veggies with pet store iguana pellots/flakes since I've had a bunch donated.

From my experience though, igs never want to touch the prepared pellots and flakes when they can have fresh veggies instead.

Anyone have any luck getting your igs to eat both veggies and pellots at the same time?

You really should stay away from pellets. Most aren't well researched, and unless they're moistened first they can really dehydrate an iguana. Greens is really your best option.

If you want to supplement with a multivitamin, I read somewhere that it is okay to give crushed Centrum mixed in with their food - probably no more than 1/2 tablet at a time. I hope I got that right.

Three years ago I purchased a female Cyclura hybrid iguana that had been eating a primarily RepCal pelleted diet for a few years. She was amazingly healthy and had good blood workups. I started her on fresh foods when she arrived here and she eats some but still prefers the pellets. I have used these pellets as a supplemental food ever since she came here. 99% of the iguanas here, including my own and the rescues, will eat the RepCal both wet and dry. This is reassuring to me since there have been a couple of instances when fresh food was not an option and I knew that the iguanas would not go hungry for a day.

I'm not recommending pelleted food as the sole source of nutrition but I do think it can be utilized in the diet when needed or desired. Soaked pellets are a good way to help in rehydration, actually.

This is MiMi, my pellet lover.

Most all brands of iguana pellets contain animal protein of some form (most of the time it's fish meal), and as iggies are 100% vegitarian, they're not good for them at all. However, there is one exception: Rep-Cal. It conatains no animal protein whatsoever, and smells really fruity when you soak it. Just keep an eye on your pellet ingredients, and if it contains something you can't feed your iggie, then don't feed it.
