red tailed green ratsnake question

Oysterpool Oct 31, 2004 12:53 PM

Hello all. I have the chance to get one of these amazing animals at an extreme discount. It IS captive breed and being quarantined as we speak (type). Can anyone give me his or her views on this misunderstood snake? Are they that mean can they be handled? Also any other info would be greatly appreciated.

I thank you kindly in advance
Shawn

very....active. lol. thats the understatement of the month. I think this is a wonderful snake. I just wish I had room for one, because a local reptile focused pet shop (they do a very good job there, very knowledgeable) has a yearling pair at $89.99 each. You can handle them, just expect to get bit. I've heard a lot of horror stories on this species, I handled one of these guys for about 10 mins and only got bit once.

>>Can anyone give me his or her views on this misunderstood snake?

I don't know what to say other than they are the perfect snake for me. I've always liked the fast/aggressive racer-type snakes, I've always liked green snakes, and I've always like arboreal snakes. No surprise I fell in love with Gonyosoma oxycephala. That fact that they don't get freaky huge is another plus for me.

>>Are they that mean can they be handled?

I don't know how to answer this question. I have never made any attempt to tame mine down and have no interest in doing so. If frequent handling is a priority for you I'd encourage you to look into Elaphe prasina (Green Bush Ratsnake) or R. boulengeri (Vietnamese Longnosed Ratsnake).

But if this snake is such a good deal I encourage you to get it. If you decide you don't like it I'll buy it from you and pay extra for it - assuming the deal is as good as you suggest.

And if you do like it, as I think you will, I have articles and e-mails from all over the world dealing with this species.

Current snakes:

1.1 Gonyosoma oxycephala - (Silver/Yellow)

3.4 Gonyosoma oxycephala - (Green)

2.1 Gonyosoma janseni - (Black)

Right on Thank you very much for the encouraging words. I am absolutely going to grab this guy while I can. If you could send any of those articles so I can be up to par on this, again I would greatly appreciate it. Also any advice from you would be great. I am hearing/reading some different info on temps and humidity.

Thanks again Shawn
