silkworm question...

joijoi29 Oct 31, 2004 02:25 PM

I have read that silkies can replace crix...is this true? Even for babies (1-2 months)? Will they eat them as well as crix? I can't find any locally to try them out and I would hate to order some and not be able to feed them. Any info on these little critters would be great! btw...how hard are they to keep until fed off?

I have been looking into them also.

from what I have heard they are not hard to keep and are good to feed. they are soft so less problem with digestion.

there are places online that sell them and a kind of food you can keep in the fridge for them.

you can get them as "Eggs" and feed as they grow.

look at the links here to sponsers and there is at least one dealer on line that you can order food and stuff.
here is one of them to check out: http://www.californiasilkworms.com/

Silkies are great! The hatchlings I have love them asnd they are less trouble and less smelly than crix. Some poeple have been saying that they should only be offered as a treat but I offer them every day and have had no problems so far. I'm not sure why they are saying that. They are higher in protien, lower in phospherus and higher in calcium than crix.

I've been getting mine from www.midwestherpetoculture.com Thomas has options where you can buy silkies and food to go with them that is more than enough untill they are fed off. If you do order just remember that you won't have to feed as many worms as you do crix cause there is more to them. I still feed crix in the mornings then put a bunch of silkies on the salad for while I'm at work.... The silkies will munch on the salad and the beardies eat them... almost like gutloading them. I know that more of the salad is gone now when I get home.

I have one hatchling that won't even hardly look at a cricket since I started giving her silkies. I don't think it would be a problem at all to switch over completely if you wanted to.

Robert

I think silkworms are great. My beardie does not however. Though she had no problems gobbeling them up in the begining she now snubs her nose at them. I still feed them ocasionally to her but she will stop eating them if I do not give her crickets as a staple. I think it has a lot to do with your beardies personality. Some might take to them as a staple.

Thanks for your input! I think I'll give them a try.

Silkworms are the easiest thing to keep. They grow fast and dont try to escape (as long as there is food). All you have to do is put in silkworm chow at least every day. They eat a lot though. And make silk all over the poop on bottom so you can't just sift them out you gotta move them by hand becuse they hang on to it. They dont bite, stink, or make noise. Silkworm food has a little smell to it but it isn't bad or overpowering, kinda like cut grass.

Sapphira loves silkies and has never been wild about crixs. You can get good information about raising silkies on the web. Google silkworms and you will find a choice of suppliers and info on raising them. Apparently teachers like to do this as a class project.
