Are any Boa's good beginner snakes?

crono_vivi Oct 31, 2004 04:52 PM

I've been recently thinking about buying my first snake, and Boa's appeal to me because I like the thicker bodies, and they also have a lot of cool variations. Are any of them for beginners?

colombian common boas are the best beginer snakes in my honest opinion.. not huge and not small and usually the most docile out of all of the boas. and on top of that there are so many variations of them to fit your taste

Hi, thanks for the reply. I looked the Columbian's up briefly, they look like another beautiful Boa. I have a couple questions concerning them:

What size enclosure would I need? I don't have a TON of room, being only 16 and a desk to put it on top of(don't think my parents would let me put a snake anywhere but my room! lol). I hope not TOO big, as that was the reason I initially didn't even consider boa's.

Also, what's the "general" price for a young CB Columbian?

Thanks a lot ahead of time.

Well those are all great questions to be conserned with while thinking about the happiness of your new snake. For a basic columbian i would personally recommend you getting a male from a breeder (not a pet store). Males will only get 5-7 feet, which although it may sound like a big size really isnt all that big. The smallest cage you would want for a full grown male columbian would be 4x2feet. Its easy to make them or you can buy a tank for about 200.00 or cheaper. The snake itself shouldnt be more than 100.00 since males are usually cheaper and usually breeders around this time of the year will have the remaining animals from last season which they are looking to get rid of. Other important aspects would be heating the tank and thermostats to control the temperature of the tank. You can look in to that if you get a little bit more serious about your purchase. But there are plenty of choices out on the market, and i do agree that these animals will make awesome pets. Very personable and friendly....Good luck with the search.

Sincerly,

several color and pattern styles as well as being the up and coming snake of the new millenium....

With 24K of these Nics imported each year, the price should drop drastically in the next few months.Imported @$6 or less per animal theres no call for people paying having to pay $65-$75 for these farmed animals,go with a common BCI,they can be found for $30-$40 pretty easy. What ever you choose make sure your ready for a long term venture and the means to care for it.

$100. a pair shipped. And whatever they cost as an import thats just business you would not buy a car for a $1,000. and sell it for $1,001.You have to consider the cost of the actual importing fees too, I have never seen a COLOMBIAN for $30-40.
But if you asked for a smaller species boa I gave it to you, Colombians even males can reech 10 foot, I have had them. Other smaller species that are redilly available captive bred are Sonoran Desert boas from Mexico, or Hog islands or Cay Caulker Island Boas,
I would say look around find what you are looking for then search for the price, someone making money shouldn't be an issue, it's why some are in the business .
But if you are looking for a damn near free boa look at the rescues, they always have boas.

Want a cheap Nic ?
Look for them listed for sale as Central Americans and you`ll get them for around $25 and even less when purchasing multiples.
Lucas has had some for acouple months now for these prices. Other sellers that dont need higher profit margins also sell for less. Just got to know where to look.Same farm same snakes.

For you to do some research, on the different Boa's available in the Pet Trade, check out the info. on the Colombian's and the Island Boa's and the Mexican's, at www.riobravoreptiles.com Gus has lot's of good info. I would say a good one for you would be, a Hog Island Boa, if you get a male he will stay on the small side and you can get one for 150.00 to 200.00. Good Luck, in your search for a new pet snake.
Have A Good One ! !
