Any suggestions for finding two kei island BTS a new home?

naql Oct 31, 2004 08:29 PM

I have two kei island BTS purchased from Central Coast reptiles about two years ago. The one that was billed as the female turned out to have a penis, which spontaneously everted during a cage cleaning. That one is the smaller and more docile in temperament. The other was originally billed as a male and is larger and considerably meaner. Both have been kept this entire time in a 95 gallan watering tank. I thought I observed some mating type behaviour last spring, but nothing came of it. They're happy as clams, fat and sassy, just not making any babies.

At any rate, I still have a northern and a bearded dragon and so I guess it's time I started thinking about simplifying my life. But, my problem is this: How to find anyone interested in acquiring these animals and then, of course, how would I ship them. I believe you are not allowed to ship animals like this unless you have a CITES permit, correct? Or, does that only apply for import/export in or out of the US?

Ideally I would like to see them go to someone who is also breeding them. I used to have the email for some people who were also trying to breed them. (I heard a while back that one person was successful..)

I'm in San Antonio TX.

you do not have to have any type of permits while shipping in the U.S., only if you want to ship overseas. if you are looking for someone to take them in, I would certainly consider it. I currently have 2 northern blueys, one male, one female that I am breeding this year. (Hef and Lissa) I have had them for a couple of years now. I have a 2 level t.v. stand w/ glass doors that I could easily and cheaply convert into a cage for 2 blueys. I live in Jacksonville, FL., and I am a college student in my 4th year of studies right now. My email is alex_bendana@yahoo.com Send me an email if you are interested. Cheers, Alex.

Your best bet since you live in Texas is to go to Reptile Shows and Swaps there. There is at least one every month. Then not only would you recoup some money, you wouldn't have to deal with shipping concerns. There are many breeders who would gladly buy them from you. Market prices have dropped as Importation has increased.

Thanks for the replies. I paid $800 for the pair. I'll probably start off with some sort of an ad and see how it goes. They've been to the vet a couple of times for screenings and I do my own fecal floats. They've been very healthy for the two years I've had them.

For now, here's a pic. It's hard to make out on the pics you see on the Internet, but they have pretty, irridescent purplish eyelids. They also go through a regular color change. Right before shedding all the yellows and greens disappear and they turn black and gray. After shedding, they revert back to the color you see here.
