First off, great pictures! What a cute little baby snake, and I've never seen a Chinese Beauty before. Cool!

Here is a snake I hope to get in the next couple of weeks. He's not full grown yet, should get another foot. To quote Steve-O, Aint he a Beaut? I can't wait to see him in person.

There are 3 species of "Hognose" Snakes in Madagascar. All 3 were named back when it was called the Malagasy Republic, so all 3 bear the term Malagasy in their names instead of Madagascar. There is the Speckled, Blonde, and Giant. I have a Blonde, they are smaller. The Malagasy Hognose Snakes are of no relation at all to the Hognose Snakes in the United States. Just a coincidence on the naming. They do hood and hiss, but don't play dead like the American Hognose Species. Malagasy Hognose species are more closely related to Cobras, and have a more potent venom than the American species. Still not deadly to people though, so are ok to have as pets, plus they are mostly bluff with the hissing and hooding and rarely bite. They are rear fanged like the American Species. Slight difference there is that the smaller species, even if they bite, would have trouble getting those fangs into your skin. This guy you could count on it if he did decide to bite. From what I read, you would have pain, swelling, some discoloration around the bite, excessive bleeding, and in rare cases temporary paralization of the limb. That last part does not always happen, probably only if you sat there and let him chew on you for several minutes. So it would be worse than a Corn bite, but nothing too serious. No hospital or anything. Just some neat photo opportunities LOL... And they just don't bite in most cases. This one is particularly tame and has been used on many demos and even been to children's birthday parties. He's never bitten anyone, is a total sweetie. I'll post more pics of him when I get him. Remote possibility it will be in two weeks. Otherwise not till December 10th. I'm getting him from a friend of a friend, but if you are interested in Hogs, visit www.Hognose.com, they have lots of great info.

I'm also picking up this Northern Water to go with my "Local" theme for demos, trying to get as many local species as I can to show people what they might come across while hiking in this area. Not too many snake species live here.

This is my Malagasy Blonde Hognose

"Still not deadly to people though, so are ok to have as pets, plus they are mostly bluff with the hissing and hooding and rarely bite."

While it is absolutely true that Malagasy hognose snakes are not truly venomous in the sense of possessing hemotoxins or nuerotoxins, and they are relatively harmless to humans, one needs to understand than some people are allergic to the saliva/venom that these snakes produce. One can enter a form of anaphalactic (sp?) shock if bitten by such an animal, and in that case, allergic reaction treatments are required rather than anti-venin. It is a rare case of this stituation occuring from a statistical perspective, but so is being violently allergic to bee stings. Nevertheless, people die from stings each year.

I'm not saying people shouldn't own these snakes, by any means. However, I think we have to be really careful identifying animals as "harmless" when they are in fact, venomous.

Further, before anyone goes out and buys a hognose, you need to make certain that they are legal to own in your area. You may not consider them dangerous, but they are technically venomous, and many communities ban venomous snakes in private collections.

They are cool snakes, though!

Very good point. I have heard that argument before regarding possibility of reaction on an allergic level. While this Hog is very calm and has never bitten, and has been used in many public demos, it has always been handled in such a way that the people were not in contact with his head to be on the safe side. The same as when I use my Carpet Python in demos, people can touch his body, but I always control his head (not a behind the head death grip, just control). I will treat the Hog the same and will not risk the chance of him biting anyone during the demos. I will also watch myself closely if ever I take a bite.
