Yet another Leopard Gecko genetics question

daudet Oct 31, 2004 09:39 PM

Okay there's about 5 million posts with this title but I gotta add another. I'm new to Leo's and want to start breeding next year. I got an awesome deal on some SHTCT females from the Albey/Urban line. I also picked up 2 patternless females and 1 jungle tangerine tremper albino female (this thing is impressive, gotta post it when I get camera working. Never seen anything like it. Looks like a jungle tremper with a carrot head and carrot tail, I mean the thing glows.)
Well the question: Any good sites on genetics? I tried that Leopard Gecko Genetics calculator, which turned out to be a nice link to some porn??? Anyway, I haven't found any good sites that explain the breedings yet of leopard geckos, morphs, etc.
Basically what I am looking for is a page that would let me see what I should breed my girls with. Any info would be appreciated.

To be truthfully honest, i think you should wait another year. Learn more about genetics, how to hatch eggs, how to use and what the proper gear to use is. Most of the basics about leopard geckos can be learned from the papers, but expierence is another thing and from what you said "im new to leopard geckos" struck me as you just got some and have no clue how to go about breeding.

I respect your opinion but I don't think waiting another year is going to make me learn anything more about breeding than I already do. I'm new to leos but I've been breeding herps for a number of years, everything from ball pythons to Green trees. If I can get Green Trees to breed and have a 95% survival rate (not just of hatchlings, but of eggs as well), I'm pretty sure I can get Leo's to breed. I've read all I can find on the web and have been reading every new post on the forums. All waiting is going to do is let me read more of what I've already read. My philosophy has always been to learn by immersion. It would be great if there was someone around here I knew that I could talk with about breeding, but there are not many sources available. So basically maybe my question should have been what type of morphs can I create with 5 SHTCT females and any male on the market?

Well it all depends on what you want, and how long you are willing to take for it to become that morph (may take years). If you want to go the SHTCT way, then thats your easiest way to start breeding and sellings, But if perhaps you want a snow, then i'd only breed the male snow to one of the SHTCT because you will get all SHTCT all het for snow, and if you dont want a lot of those then i'd just do one female. So basically its all on you, if you want to wait to get the morph you really want then go ahead, but the easiest way to get breeding and make some cash is to just keep making and getting better quality SHTCT.

But yeah if you feel you can handle breeding geckos than you should, i didnt know you have been doing research already. When someone says "im new to leopard geckos" i automatically think you havnt done any research and are just trying to get some general info.
