Sharp-tailed snake pics

I had to dig up my sharp-tail for a presentation I did this weekend and since I had him out I thought that I'd snap a few pictures.

Excellent looking snake, Alice! Sharp-tails are on my list - he reminds me a lot of my Aurora house snakes. Do you have him on slugs, is he taking anything else? Such a fantastic species, and great pics.

Thanks! So far he's only interested in slugs. When I first caught him back in June, I experimented with other prey items (small snails, crickets, mealworms, sow bugs, earthworms ...), but none were taken. When I caught him, I was intending to maintain him on slugs, so it has worked out well for the both of us.

I like your house snake, I've never heard of them before; where is it from?

Hi, Alice.

Is that a range extension? Last I heard, Contia is unknown south of Pine Mountain in NW San Luis Obispo county. But we know how colubrids can escape detection for decades or centuries.... Nice catch in any event.

No range extension. I caught him last June on a trip up to Santa Cruz; I found him in an area being cleared for development in the redwoods. There was lots of scrap wood lying around and I found him under a piece of it. From what I can tell, he's one of the long tailed type.

Oh neat snake. I never saw a or heard of that type of snake. Is it a big hider like most smallish ground dwelling snakes?

They hide constantly. The only times I've seen mine out have been when I've turned on the lights in the middle of the night. He spends the day buried in the bed-a-beast (they are great burrowers) or under his bark slab.

Thanks for telling me. Neat looking snake but thats the rule of these small snakes allways hiding. I would like to find a small terrarium type snake that doesnt hide 23 hours and 58 minutes out of 24 By the way I noticed you liked house snakes.
Petstore I go to had them super neat and small to. Heehee I to like them.
