Stupid Question...

tommyturtle Nov 01, 2004 11:25 AM

I have a sister-in-law who keeps a couple of RES's. Both are female, and she's had one for 15 years and one for 5. The other day, she called me to tell me that she found something in their water that she thought looked like eggs. When I saw them, they looked to me like eggs as well, so that is what I'm supposing (I keep Hermanns and Russian tortoises). I feel dumb asking this question, but I know it happens with snakes: How do two females manage to have eggs?

I do not KNOW that these two turtles are female but they look pretty much like females to me. Is there the possibility that she has a pair, or is it possible to produce eggs without any sperm?

That's my question. Thanks in advance for your help.

females can lay eggs at ANY time without a male around... the problem is that the eggs will not hatch because they are not fertilized by a male... if both of the turtles are females, then the eggs are not fertilized and they are no good.

females will lay their eggs in the water if they do not have some soil to bury them in. even if the eggs were fertilized they would not be any good because they were laid in the water!

the only problem is that if the eggs would break in the water, it would cause a horrible mess!

if you catch the eggs and they werent in the water for more than a few hours they might still be good you could try to incubate them and see if anything hatches
