Is it okay to keep a tank in front of a closed window?

aliaime Nov 01, 2004 02:03 PM

I've read countless feedback from herpers saying the best lighting is from direct sunlight. Should I place my 55 gallon tank next to the window to provide ny boas adequate lighting?

I'm not sure I want popular opinion on my side -- I've noticed those with the most opinions often have the fewest facts.

I have a 10 gallon with fire bellie toads and it's not even near a window. But when the sunlight hits the tank it will raise the temp to high.
Having sun light to light your tank is asking for trouble. If you want them to have natural sunlight take them outside when it's nice weather and temps, otherwise provide the necessary lighting.

Really just depends on the tank lid, because heat goes up. So unless you live in a very warm area it doesn't matter too much. You could try it with a empty 10-gallon, but with proper ventilation it shouldn't heat up enough to cook your snakes.

Also, the glass filters out most (if not all) UVB rays, so it would be pretty much useless anyways.
