I know it's done with geckos and other species. I was concerned mostly with the respiratory issue. Do you think the boas will be smart enough to move out of the humid box when he/she doesn't need it?

Nope LOL!! sadly Boas are some of Gods dummmmbest critters !
Proper husbandary skills is all thats needed,proper temp/humidity both in cage and ambient(room temp)are all thats needed for healthly "pet" Boas.Unstable humidity to the high side(exceeding 60%)is probably the most common cause for RI.
Proper research before owning a Boa and its locality is a MUST.
Raiseing BCI like GTP`s is basically what happens.
