Crazy Male Hormones

micheley Nov 01, 2004 03:52 PM

Hello. Recently we added a male slider with our 2 females and he, Freddy, is out of control. He's constantly pursuing my females. We've got a big cave for our turts and even when they're chillin in there; Freddy is STILL trying to mate. We separated him, but what's up with those hormones?? Freddy is 3 years old. Is his persistency a phase? From the time the light is turned on until it goes off, Freddy is like a "mating maniac".
Anyway, we were thinking about adding another male with Freddy in a separate tank, but wanted a second opinion on this. Would the males fight a lot? The new male would be about the same age as Freddy. Any feedback would be helpful.

HAHA yeah males are "mating maniacs". My male painted turtle is alone in his tank and he tries to mate with his rocks. So even if you do get another male and put the two of them in a seperate tank, he will still try to mate with the other male. There is alos a chance that they will fight. I would just get the new tank like you wanted to and put him in there alone. Turtles don't really need a tank mate and some actually prefer to be alone. I think your male would be better off alone. He is just stressing out your females and he might even be stressing himself out. Good luck.

can you tell me what the male looks like when he's trying to mate with the rocks? MY male RES is aprox. 6in in length and today I noticed him at the bottom of the tank with something black coming out. I thought he was having a bowel movement but it went back in. I'm just scared that he's ate a rock and he's having troulbe passing it.

I wouldn't worry about it, that's only him getting friendly with the rock. aka his penis. They always seem to find a favourite one. . .
