Supplies, Materials and Money spent to start breeding rats

Macroclemys Nov 01, 2004 03:54 PM

I would like to start off with 2 breeding pairs of rats to have for producing feeders for my yellow conda. She is still small at around 28-30 inches. So anyone who would like to help me with what all I will need and an estimate money wise it will cost to get this rolling I would really appreciate it. Steven

Personally I would get a trio. One male and two female....or more if you want. You can house them together or apart. I like to keep my rats in bigger cages, they do better with air flow. But many use tubs and are fine. I would get a trio in a enclosure somewhere around 1X2 or 18 inches by 2ft. Tubs at Walmart and melt or drill holes. Get young, small or, at most medium rats as they will breed faster than old ones that may be worn out anyway. Dog kibble, supplement with leftovers, bed in aspen, rabbit pellets/cellsorb plus/yesterdays news (though these are heavier they are very absorbant). Water bottle.
