Male/female Taiwan beauty

Jonasgn Nov 01, 2004 04:16 PM

Hello i`m getting a pair of Taiwan beauty snakes soon. Actually i`m sharing them with a friend, she will get one and i will get one. My friend would rather have the smaller of the two, so my guestion is:
Is it the male or the female that gets bigger?
Thanks a lot
Jonas

male grows to usually 9 feet, female usually to 8 feet. however the female will have a little more attitude, i discovered after I bought a female blue. lol. So really the size isnt the issue here...its more of who can control a very active nippy snake, that will grow to 5 feet in one year.

Hey Jonas,
I dont know that either sex grows larger than the other. I have kept several pairs of taeniura including taiwans, with either sex ending up being the larger adult.
If they are from different bloodlines, one of the bloodlines could be larger in general which would not actually depend on the sex.
If a female is bred at to young an age it can stunt her possible adult maximum size.
Females are often fed much more for breeding year after year while males are consistantly fed less but are extremly active half of each year while in the breeding mode which are just some of the things that can effect adult size.
I am rambling a bit but what I am trying to get at is I dont think either sex necessarily tends to be the larger than the other unless you attempt to grow one faster.
Schulz's book on Elaphe does not list either sex as reaching a larger adult size than the other. His book lists the Taiwans average length at 220 cm and the largest specimen measured at 270 cm.
I hope this helps. Randy Whittington
