I think my ball has an infection!

kbhuegin Nov 01, 2004 05:21 PM

I got my ball about a month ago, and it's eyes fogged up roughly a week and a half ago. It barely shed, specifically just its head. The rest of its body had the old skin on, and I was told by my local pet shop to try and roll it off. Some came off, but much of it didn't. The stomach area has old skin that is sticky and won't come off. It's wet and somehow turning pink. It seems to be acting normal. I just gave it a bath to try to get the rest of the skin off, but I'm waiting for that. It's my first snake so I'm very worried. Poor college kids can't afford to have a dead snake! If anyone has any clue and can help that would be awesome. Thanks.

I have seen the regulars here say to put the snake in a damp pillow case under its heat lamp so it can stay warm... You can search the forums using the link I have provided...

under a heatlamp..That is good way to bake your snake. It would be to difficult to control the temp. and the snake would have no way to escape. Your better off soaking him in warm water for 15min. or so.But if its an infection the vet is best..

Ok my bad...I said under the heat lamp... I meant on the warm side of his cage where the temps are monitored.

You say the scales are wet and pink? Turning pink is one of the first signs of belly rot so I would not rule out an infection. Also the fact that your snake already shed and those belly scales are not coming off, make me lean towards infection as well. I would get your snake to a reputable reptile vet (the sooner the better). They would be able to tell you for sure. The sooner you get it diagnosed the easier the treatment also.
Good luck

Becky
