Monitor Feeding Questions!

vulcan Nov 01, 2004 05:51 PM

I've had a baby black rough neck for about a month now and all it wants to eat are crickets. It goes nuts for crickets! I've tried all other feeder insects, with the sole exception of roaches, and it wont touch them. What really bothers me is that it ignores mice; pinkies and fuzzies. How can I entice my rough neck to go for mice? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Live. I haven't tried f/t or prekilled yet. Though a pinkie did die in the enclosure when I left it overnight one time. I'm sure it died of natural causes because my rudi ignored it the whole time it was in there. But even when it was dead my rudi still ignored it.

The reason I asked live or f/t is cause alot of times if they take to bugs , they will take to a little rodent crawling about too.

You can try chopping up the pinkies sometimes that works.

60 gallon with cypress mulch substrate, large branch, large "Vision" water bowl with a hole cut into the bottom at cool end, flat piece of cork bark under the basking site.

Temps: 79F at cool end, 86F at warm end, 105F basking spot.

I have a friend who sometimes cuts open the mice to attract his blue tongue skink. I think he even rubbed blood on its nose to give it a taste. Sounds like a good way to get bitten to me.
